Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a physiological state impairing immunity and leading to disturbances of protective mechanisms of the organism. Additionally, excess of hormones stimulates the increased production of substances in vaginal cells, which causes changes in proportion of vaginal microorganisms. Disturbance of balance of vaginal flora occurs then. Disturbance of balance of vaginal flora in pregnancy is a risk of:

  • bacterial vaginosis (BV) - frequency of BV occurrence in pregnant women is estimated to be 10 - 41%;
  • human papilloma (HPV) infection - because production of hormones during pregnancy limits the immunity of the organism. It leads to good conditions for development of viral infection. HPV is not only dangerous for a pregnant woman from oncological point of view, but also it may cause infection of the foetus;
  • mycotic infections;
  • chlamydia - in 18.7% to 21.4% of pregnant women in Poland, infections with chlamydia which were related to complications of pregnancy, were detected.

During pregnancy, intimate regions should be maintained in especially clean condition. Washing the vulva with a water stream is indicated, especially under shower. For washing private parts, intimate hygiene fluid may be used. Baths may rinse protective cultures of lactic acid bacteria.

As it can be seen, disturbances of vaginal flora in pregnancy constitute the risk for the developing foetus. Prevention of such disturbances in the form of control visits to gynaecologist, carrying out additional examination and using probiotics with protective bacterial cultures, results in a decrease of number of infections and vaginitis, and at the same time in a decrease of obstetric failures.
