Methods of Treatment

In the case of slight discharge, women can use over-the-counter drugs, which upon emergency use may limit development of pathological flora in the vagina due to their quite wide spectrum of action. Reduction of pathological flora does not mean restoration of physiological flora. In such situation, agents reducing vaginal pH may be used but, first of all, supplementation of lactic acid bacteria by administration of products which contain them. These products may be presented in the intravaginal form (their action is then fast, because they are given directly to the vagina) or in the oral form. Oral probiotics have to migrate first through gastrointestinal tract and colonize of its end section, and then the vagina. That is why its effect is not so fast comparing to intravaginal products but last longer because rectum becomes a source of “good” bacteria. In situations when the above methods are ineffective, gynaecologist should be immediately consulted.

At least once in a year gynaecologist should be consulted in order to conduct general examination and additional examinations depending upon indications (general, oncologic, hormonal cytodiagnostics, mammography).

Generally, in order to avoid infection itself or highly reduce its intensity, women should wear light underwear, reduce using tampons, use liquid for intimate hygiene of pH 5.5, avoid excessive visits of swimming pools, sauna, solarium, public toilets. Use of the same toiletries (e.g. the same towels) should be avoided, and condoms should be used, which, besides contraceptive function, also protects from sexually-transmitted infections( trichomoniasis, chlamydiosis, mycosis, HIV)
