Role of Gynaecological Probiotics

Probiotic preparations are used in prophylaxis and treatment to replace and restore healthy bacterial flora of the urogenital system. Probiotics are recommended in the course of and after antibacterial, antifungal and anti-trichomonal treatment. Use of probiotics is critical in recurrent and secondary infections, especially in pregnant women, in women with reduced immunity.

Preparations containing lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus spp.) show high efficacy in prevention of secondary and recurrent infections of the vagina and lower section of the urinary tract. Lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus strains) contained in „gynaecological” probiotics inhibit pathogenic bacteria.

Probiotic preparations used in gynaecology may have the form of intravaginal or oral capsules. It should be remembered that choice of route of administration of probiotic depends mostly on preference of a woman or doctor’s indications. However, it seems that due to immediate effect, intravaginal products produce faster effect – it is important in acute inflammations, however, this effect lasts shorter due to lack of so-called probiotic intestinal reservoir, whereas oral products should be used in chronic conditions.
