Suplementation

In every infection type, there are quantitative and qualitative changes of vagina microflora and decrease of dominating there physiological lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus genus). That is why, supplementation of this bacteria should be carried out. It may be done using products called “probiotics” which can be administered orally or intravaginally.

Independently of whether the preparation is in the oral or intravaginal form, using probiotic is beneficial in the following situations:

A. as supplementation:

  • during and after antibiotic treatment;
  • upon diagnosed bacterial, parasitic, viral or mycotic vaginal and vulvar infections;
  • upon recurrent, secondary and chronic vaginal and vulvar infections.

B. as a prophylaxis of infection in urogenital system:

  • before and after planned surgery;
  • for menopausal women;
  • for women whose sexual activity, life style, profession or physical activity increase the risk of infection of urogenital tract (frequent change of sexual partners, frequent travels, using swimming pool, low sanitary and hygienic level of environment and the like).

Better knowledge of antagonistic properties of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus genus) toward pathogenic microorganisms confirms their very important role in prevention and treatment of various diseases.

In the future, in the light of increasing drug resistance of microorganisms, probiotic bacteria may be desired factors supporting treatment. Special attention should be paid whether available now preparations were clinically tested and meet requirements of WHO/FAO.
